Vicious Circle, the seminal 1982 debut from Indianapolis’s underrated Zero Boys, isn’t your typical 80s hardcore record. It’s obviously the work of talented punks, with intelligent songwriting, crisp hooks, and a poppy, Ramones-like flavor—a far cry from the usual gruff, gnarly riffs and ham-fisted drum parts, all learned ten minutes before the tape rolled (not that there’s anything wrong with that). On the perfect “Civilization’s Dying,” front man Paul Mahern sings with a one-of-a-kind sneer that’s nimble and misanthropic and sounds great leading an anthemic chorus. The Zero Boys have been reuniting on and off since 2006, and this year they self-released Monkey, their first full-length in more than two decades. It doesn’t snarl quite like Vicious Circle—it’s more proto than punk—but Mahern still sounds like he’s having a blast, and the band’s as tight as ever. —Kevin Warwick
