Most of these 28 new films and videos are aggressive, provocative, and reasonably well made. Several are excellent: James Fotopoulos's Insect intercuts a nude woman with a bug, suffusing her body with unease; Lucy Weismann's In the Red offers a similarly disturbing but humorous treatment of menstruation, its bright, cartoonish colors echoing (and including) blood; and Mark Hejnar's troubling Proxy combines autopsy footage, shots of young children (some of them disabled), and sound-track references to incest and kiddie porn, a weird mix that captures the violating effect of such horrors. Others of interest include Greg Pak's steamy All Amateur Ecstasy, which intercuts three women reaching orgasm; Jack Beck's poetic Jon's Point, LA, which turns the lights of Los Angeles into abstract lines of color; and Jeffrey Pee and Chris Graphenberg's animated Birth of Abomination (Mute and Motormouth) (2000), in which two brothers encounter a crack-addicted whore (and that's the nice part).
