Biography, Historical Drama
This glitzy biopic of the renowned French fashion designer doesn't offer much insight into its subject or milieu (European haute couture from the late 50s to the early 80s), but if you're looking to see lots of attractive people model his clothes, you won't be disappointed. The script—by Marie-Pierre Huster, Jacques Fieschi, and director Jalil Lespert, adapting a biography by Laurence Benaïm—follows a narrative pattern familiar from countless other artist biopics: Saint Laurent begins his career as a young idealist, hits the big time, and gets mired in a life of excess. The main difference is that nothing seems to be at stake dramatically, because he lived his entire life in a cocoon of social privilege (call this a riches-to-riches story). In French with subtitles.
Director: Jalil Lespert
Producer: Wassim Béji, Yannick Bolloré, Lionel Uzan, Thierry Desmichelle and Wassim Béji
Cast: Pierre Niney, Guillaume Gallienne, Charlotte Le Bon, Laura Smet, Marie de Villepin, Nikolai Kinski, Ruben Alves, Astrid Whettnall, Marianne Basler, Adeline D'Hermy and Xavier Lafitte
