Rob Lowe on a hockey team is a little like Cheryl Tiegs linebacking for the Bears, yet this teen go-for-it movie is blissfully unconcerned with plausibility: all it does is recycle the insufferably trite cliches of the subgenre, from All the Right Moves to VisionQuest, while adding a few blockhead touches of its own. It isn't enough that farm boy Lowe is a great skater: to make it in professional hockey, he's also got to learn to be a bloodthirsty goon, and the film traces every step in his progression from pacifist to thug with glowing approval. The director is erstwhile independent Peter Markle (The Personals), who happily embraces every aspect of post-Spielberg Hollywood's stylistic hype: with every Big Moment filmed in mythic slow motion, the picture looks like it was shot in somebody's swimming pool. With Cynthia Gibb, Ed Lauter, and Patrick Swayze.
