Young Dro In 2006 Atlanta MC Young Dro released his debut single, “Shoulder Lean,” which featured a prominent guest spot by his label boss T.I. and an unshakable hook that exemplified southern rap’s mid-aughts infatuation with dead-simple melodies that sound like something picked up from a schoolyard jump-rope game. It became a summer-dominating top-ten hit, and the LP Best Thang Smokin’ followed soon after—after which Dro more or less fell off the map. He regularly released mixtapes, but last year’s High Times (Grand Hustle) is his first label album since then. He spent his time out of the pop spotlight productively, though. The lead single on High Times, “F.D.B.,” isn’t anywhere near as instantly catchy as “Shoulder Lean,” but it’s a far better song—it not only shows off a skill set that’s more refined than it was in ’06, but also allows Dro to turn a radically stripped-down trap-style beat into an arena-worthy anthem. —Miles Raymer A-Rrey and C-Streetz open.
