George Bernard Shaw's seldom-seen 1897 play combines the elegant wit of a Victorian comedy of manners with the complex tone of a Shakespearean romance. It concerns a destitute dentist's attempts to woo a fiercely independent heiress and explores themes of sexual, generational, and class conflict in a society facing radical social transformation as the 19th century crashes into the 20th. Shawn Douglass's production for Remy Bumppo Theatre Company captures the teasing wit and bristling intelligence of Shaw's text. The ensemble is uniformly excellent, though Dale Benson steals the show as the wise butler—named William in Shakespeare's honor--who comments on the aristocrats' follies. —Albert Williams
