For the past couple years Yelawolf has occupied a weird position on many rap critics' lists of next big things; he's usually situated amongst artists who've earned their spots by rapping over indie-rock beats or cultivating outre images as art-damaged skate punks, two things I have a hard time imagining him doing. (The one thing relatively artsy about him is his haircut, which looks like something straight out of this season's SAIC look book.) Yelawolf makes capital-letter Southern Rap, which means it's rawkus, rhythmically complex, and bounces between a giddy sort of drugginess and a more menacing, paranoid version. His recent hit "Hard White (Up in the Club)"—from the forthcoming Radioactive (Shady/Interscope)—boasts a guest spot by Lil Jon and a level of aggressiveness that makes me wonder what kind of club Yelawolf's up in, and what the odds are of someone getting beat up in it. —Miles Raymer DJ Craze and Rittz open.
