Early in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ career they frequently turned up in trend pieces next to electroclash artists, which didn’t make a lot of sense to me at first. Though the YYYs shared a time, a place, and a taste for asymmetrical hairstyles with that scene, their downtown-style neo-garage punk—just voice, drums, and guitar—was more than a little at odds with the retro-sleek coked-up-robot vibe of electro. But at their heart the YYYs were similarly hedonistic, and a few choice remixes played up that connection to create synergistic gold: Tommie Sunshine’s version of “Y Control,” for instance, can still fill dance floors. It’s weird that it took till It’s Blitz! (Interscope) for the band to really get into dosing their own stuff with electronics, but the results are mostly good. On the stomping “Heads Will Roll” Karen O refashions the disco-diva archetype to fit her personal quirks, and “Hysteric” makes this the YYYs’ third album running with a heartbreakingly tender pop epic late in the program—awash in Disintegration-style synths and echoing guitars, it’s every bit as capable of bringing on the bittersweet tears as their classic “Maps.” —Miles Raymer
