Prepare yourself for a very special evening of Mayan and Aztec metal. Is that a thing, you ask? Of course it is, and Yaotl Mictlan (from Utah by way of Mexico) play the hell out of it. As so many metal bands do, they draw on pre-Christian mythology and the history of warfare, but their indigenous perspective helps this fascination read as a form of anticolonialist resistance. Their vicious, unrelenting black-metal onslaught gives glorious voice to the violence and ecstasy of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican religions and to the fury of an uprising among the conquered. This is Yaotl Mictla’s first-ever Chicago appearance, which would make this show a noteworthy occasion even if the bill (grandly titled “Return of Queztalcoatl”) didn’t also feature Milwaukee’s Sacrificial Massacre and a pre-Hispanic folk trio called Hurakan to continue the theme.
