The title lures its target audience with the promise of military handjobs, but this is a mostly sexless production. David and Joseph Zellnik’s script follows a young army recruit (Matthew Huston) as he enters a forbidden romance with his squad’s resident hunk (William Dwyer, voice smooth as gun oil). As a tribute to socially conscious musicals of the past like South Pacific, the lack of sexual content makes sense, but sexual interactions are essential to the central tension: intimate relationships develop between men develop during wartime, but they become dangerous once they become physical. The lead’s gay awakening manifests as a tap-dancing number with a colleague at Yank magazine (John Marshall Jr.), and the sweaty, stirring scene is the closest this musical comes to true passion. —Oliver Sava
