Xxyyxx, Teen Daze (DJ set), Uncle El, Vapor Eyes

When: Fri., Feb. 22, 10 p.m. 2013
It’s more than a little ironic that the American artist who comes closest to replicating the distinctly nocturnal ambience of British producer Burial hails from sunny Orlando, Florida. Seventeen-year-old Marcel Everett, known professionally as XXYYXX, has some of Burial’s way with fractured rhythms and aquatic reverb, but his roots are in hip-hop and American R&B, not the off-kilter London-born genre called two-step. Last year he released a fascinating self-titled album through Bandcamp that alternates between bare-bones minimalism and bursts of lush synth-pop constructed from vocal samples warped and distended beyond recognition. It’s strangely accessible despite its weirdness, and given the fact that producers from the leading edge of the hip-hop and R&B avant-garde are being warmly embraced by the establishment machinery (see Clams Casino), I wouldn’t be surprised to see the XXYYXX name turn up on some high-profile records soon. —Miles Raymer Teen Daze (DJ set), Uncle El, and Vapor Eyes open.
