Wycliffe Gordon | Harris Theater | Jazz | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Sun., Jan. 25, 1 p.m. 2009
Price: $30, $15 for children
Trombonist Wycliffe Gordon first made his name with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, and like his former boss he’s old-school all the way: he’s got a fat tailgatin’ sound, a bone-deep bluesiness, and a penchant for Satchmo-style singing. Gordon’s here with his quintet as part of the Kraft Family Series, and while he’s tweaking his usual repertoire a bit to accommodate the show’s educational theme—it’s a survey of the great African-American traditions called “The Spirit of the Music”—much of his standard material would work just fine. “Shhh!!! (The Band Is Trying to Play),” the opener on Cone’s Coup (Criss Cross, 2006), is a broadly comic entreaty to a chattering audience, and his garrulous solos are so full of whinnies, growls, and blustery glissandos that a kid might think there’s a zoo backstage. The Chicago Children’s Choir will also join in for a few pieces. —Peter Margasak
