Wrong Turn

Conflating The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance, this horror flick by Rob Schmidt finds six young people stranded in the West Virginia mountains and stalked by a trio of gibbering hillbilly cannibals. Severe inbreeding has turned the mountain men into scraggly, harelipped, humpbacked beasts, and their murderous shenanigans are oddly gender specific: their male victims die by bow and arrow, while the women get it in the teeth (one is gagged with a length of barbed wire, another is decapitated just above the lower jaw). Schmidt works the slasher formula for all it's worth, but the repulsive stereotype at the center of the movie dampens the fun. With Desmond Harrington, Eliza Dushku, and Jeremy Sisto. 95 min.
