Henry Dennett is a middle-aged poet with nothing but contempt for the compromises that go with popular success—well, nothing but contempt and an enormous, symbolic tapeworm eating at his guts. After spending an evening suffering Henry's scorn, a big-time Broadway playwright offers him $100,000 if he can write a play and get it produced within six months. Of course Henry takes the bet. David Hirson's satiric fable may be too cumbersome to work well even under optimum conditions, but it needs more nuanced treatment than it gets in this Rare Terra Theatre production directed by Ian Streicher. Some roles are pushed too hard, some not hard enough. Richard Sandoval comes down on the not-hard-enough side, failing to make Henry the sacred monster he needs to be. —Tony Adler
