Freida Lee Mock, who won an Oscar for her documentary Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision, directed this worshipful portrait of Tony Kushner, the Pulitzer-winning author of Angels in America and Munich. Scenes from his work (including the Broadway and TV versions of Angels and a hilarious monologue by Marcia Gay Harden as Laura Bush reading to dead Iraqi children) are juxtaposed with commentary from his colleagues, parents, and life companion. But the main speaker is Kushner, holding forth on art, AIDS, gay identity, and the Middle East. (He's equally harsh on the Taliban, the Iraq war, and Israel's treatment of the Palestinians.) The film will interest Kushner's admirers, but Mock preaches to the choir rather than challenging her provocative, sometimes self-righteous subject. 98 min.
