Neil LaBute specializes in scripts about people with moral flaws as deep as their sense of self-regard is inflated. In his better work (Bash, In the Company of Men), these monsters are by turns infuriating and fascinating; in a flawed work like this one, they're merely annoying. Inspired by Greek myth, Wrecks concerns a loquacious, self-satisfied protagonist narrating the aftermath of his wife's death. Unfortunately, LaBute's flaccid narrative depends too much on the revelation of surprises that attentive audience members will probably have guessed. Which is a shame, because John Judd turns in a virtuoso performance, filled with honest, moving moments that almost redeem the material. —Jack Helbig
