The colossal tracks on Wreck & Reference’s 2014 album, Want (Flenser), sound like they’re made by a band playing instruments not of this planet, which is partially true. The experimental-metal duo creates a tapestry of heaviness out of a collection of samples that are blended and blurred till they sound like the torrid winds of Aeolus, or bubbling volcanic lava. Drummer-singer Ignat Frege and programmer-singer Felix Skinner wield gargantuan power, which they dole out across the length of Want. As a whole the near-silent moments on, say, “Bankrupt” are as important to the tectonic shifts as the supersized barrage on the album’s opener, “Corpse Museum.” Wreck & Reference’s sui generis nature extends to its live setup too. Instead of a behemoth, Skinner plays a sampler that’s strapped to his body like a guitar, and this amplifies his evocative, erratic motions—as he dances to the pulse of the group’s unconventional, forceful music, he looks like he could be in the crowd. —Leor Galil
