Wreck & Reference, Dead Dragon Mountain, Venowl Recommended Soundboard

California experimental duo Wreck & Reference make seriously heavy metal without guitars. Drummer-singer Ignat Frege and programmer-singer Felix Skinner piece together everything but their vocals and Frege’s percussion in Ableton Live, processing and contorting an array of samples into, say, a mechanically rumbling fuzz riff. (They also run the final mix through a guitar amp to give it a rough texture.) Wreck & Reference approach songwriting similarly unconventionally: last year’s outstanding No Youth combines cavernous, haunting melodies, gnarly blastbeats, stuttering samples of what sounds like rocks falling, and deep, drawn-out sighs (and that’s all on just one track, “Nausea”). The recent No Content seven-inch (Flenser) is just as great: on the A side, “Absurdities & Echoes,” Wreck & Reference get heavy with minimal drumming and a funereal drone like a subterranean air-raid siren, so that when they segue into beautifully stark atmospherics it’s as though an angel is ripping through a menacing thunderstorm in a dazzling ray of light. —Leor Galil Dead Dragon Mountain and Venowl open.
