Bally Total Fitness and XSport Fitness

Multiple locations

ballyfitness.com or xsportfitness.com

If walks in the park and the occasional sit-up aren't doing much to combat the effects of summertime hot dogs and beer but you aren't ready to become a full-fledged gym rat, you may want to consider a trial membership at Bally or XSport Fitness. You can download a two-week pass to the Bally of your choice at their Web site; you have to sign up for a one-week XSport pass in person. Each gym throws in a personal training session (including the dreaded body fat measurement test), a tour and instruction on all the machines, and classes. But be careful: after three weeks of working out, you may be so hooked on your incipient six-pack that you'll actually join. --Megan Roberts
