Priggish Arnolphe lives in horror of being cuckolded and therefore raises his ward and presumptive wife, Agnes, to be an adoring simpleton. But she falls for a handsome doofus, the son of Arnolphe's best friend, all the same. Moliere's School for Wives is a festival of wordplay, physical comedy, and visual gags in this Vintage Theater Collective production adroitly staged by Katy Collins from an adaptation by Eric Powell Holm. Caitlin Costello and Emily Shain earn the greatest portion of the laughs as Arnolphe's idiotic servants--particularly in the cunning pre-show hijinks. But everyone in the five-member ensemble negotiates the tiny in-the-round playing area and Holm's deliberately crude anachronisms (rhyming Arnolphe's pseudonym, "Monsieur de la Souche," for instance, with "stupid douche") with near-perfect pitch and balance. —Kerry Reid
