“Pharmakon” is an ancient Greek word that can mean both “remedy” and “poison,” which is undoubtedly why New Yorker Margaret Chardiet chose it as the name for her visceral solo noise project. On the recent Abandon (Sacred Bones), her first release available in a format other than cassette or CD-R, you can hear both definitions: barbed sonic destruction and the intense catharsis that comes from unleashing it. She embeds a mix of primal screams and harrowing chants within corrosive, seething discord and industrial grinding—imagine a young Diamanda Galas fronting Throbbing Gristle or Hunting Lodge. The unrelenting attack suits Chardiet’s confrontational onstage presence too—she directly engages her audiences, demanding eye contact and fighting their tendency to look away. —Peter Margasak Wolf Eyes headline; Pharmakon and Marshstepper open.
