Woke Up Black

Mary Morten's documentary focuses on five African-American college students, all from the Chicago area, whose candid conversation reveals the challenges they face: poverty, drugs, street gangs, splintered families, negative media stereotypes, self-doubt, and the low expectations of a racially divided society. One woman is an engineering major from the suburbs who's used to functioning in a mostly white environment. The other four are inner-city kids: an ex-con working as a community organizer, an honors student raised by a gay male couple after years in foster care, a business student homesick during her first year away at school, and a self-identified "genderqueer" whose adoptive parents take pride in her accomplishments but disapprove of her sexuality.
