Set in New York City in the mid-60s, Rick Karlin and Scott Free's new musical, here receiving its world premiere from New American Folk Theatre, owes a lot to the classic 60s TV series Bewitched. Like it, the show uses an ensemble of interesting, eccentric characters (both witch and human) as a coded way to discuss forms of social intolerance (most notably the pre-Stonewall persecution of homosexuals). Likewise, Free's wonderful torchy songs evoke the spirit of mid-60s pop—especially when they're belted out by powerhouses like Caitlin Jackson and Sarah Blevins. Sadly, Karlin's flat, fragmented, all-too-predictable book can't keep pace with Free's spirited score—again and again, it lets the air out of the show just when we were hoping it would take us into the stratosphere. —Jack Helbig
