Developed at the Sundance Institute by writer-director Josh Sternfeld, this beautifully unemphatic small-town drama stars Anthony LaPaglia as a New Jersey landscape architect trying to deal with his two teenage sons, one of them (Mark Webber) screwing up in school and the other (Aaron Stanford) plotting his escape to a dead-end job in Florida. Allison Janney is a middle-aged woman at loose ends who's house-sitting down the street and seems to like the father. The mother's absence isn't explained until the movie's almost over, a transparent narrative device that limits the drama but also allows the conflicts among the three men to play out in agreeably natural fashion. R, 90 min. Century 12 and CineArts 6, Pipers Alley.
