Produced by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, in cooperation with the U.S. State Department's Office of Holocaust Issues, this solemn historical documentary by Richard Trank names British prime minister Winston Churchill "the greatest figure of the 20th century" for his role in defeating Hitler. Less a biography than a diplomatic history of Britain in World War II, the movie samples some of Churchill's stirring radio broadcasts as the Nazi threat was building, and it draws a satisfying narrative arc from his extended campaign to rally President Roosevelt and the American public to Britain's defense. Once the U.S. has joined the fight, Trank and coscreenwriter Marvin Hier start wrapping up, though they carefully note that Roosevelt and Churchill clashed over the prime minister's fervent support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Ben Kingsley narrates; among the talking heads are Doris Kearns Goodwin, Churchill biographer Martin Gilbert, and Vera Lynn, who entertained British troops as a radio songbird in the 40s.
