Wino & Conny Ochs, Earthen Grave (acoustic)

In the 1980s, as front man for the Obsessed and Saint Vitus, Scott "Wino" Weinrich helped transform the deep, demonic acid rock of Black Sabbath and Pentagram into a new subgenre called doom metal; he then spent the following couple decades promoting it as a stripped-down alternative to the hundred ill-considered fads that swept the metal world during that time. A prolific collaborator—he's worked with Neurosis's Scott Kelly as well as Fugazi's Joe Lally—Weinrich recently hooked up with German singer-songwriter Conny Ochs to record an acoustic album called Heavy Kingdom (Southern Lord), which reconnects doom metal with its distant ancestor the blues. Of course, this being a Wino project and all, it's less a straight tribute to the form and more a fever-dream psychedelic reimagining of it. —Miles Raymer
