NOTE: Even though many businesses have begun re-opening, generally at reduced capacities and with many restrictions, music venues and theaters in particular are likely to remain closed for some time. For any in-person event, check with the venue or event organizer to confirm details or for information about any health and safety plans in place. We are maintaining a list of cancellations and making updates as events are rescheduled for later dates. We have also added new listings for online events, including online theater and performing arts events and streaming concerts and music events.
Joffrey Ballet offers free streaming versions of pieces "reimagined" for virtual performance and created for the company's Winning Works Choreographic Competition. The dancers are from the Joffrey Studio Company and Joffrey Academy. On Thursday, March 25, the company presents Chanel DaSilva's Borders, which "imagines the boundaries—both literal and figurative—that people place on themselves and others." On Friday, March 26, Tsai Hsi Hung's Brushstroke premieres; it draws inspiration from designer Alexander McQueen and painter Jackson Pollock, using "the line" as a central theme. On Thursday, April 8, the music of Frédéric Chopin (based on a theme by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) inspires "microdramas" in Durante Verzonla's Ballet de Cour, an evocation of ballet's 17th-century origins. On Friday, April 9, ¡VIVA! celebrates the Joffrey Academy's tenth anniversary with a piece choreographed by Pablo Sanchez, with music by Mexican composers Manuel Ponce and José Pablo Moncayo. The pieces will be available either at the Joffrey website or their YouTube channel indefinitely after the premieres.
