Winifred Haun & Dancers and Paula Frasz

Sometimes an artist's hardship is an audience's gain: in a smart piece of economizing, Chicago choreographers Winifred Haun and Paula Frasz have teamed up for a joint concert. Though they're both talented, both modern dancers, both capable of fine abstract and narrative dances, in other ways they couldn't be more different. Haun strikes a high, almost glassy note in her choreography, especially her new work for this program, Remake, an abstract dance for four women to music by Anton Webern. Its strong formal contrasts--between horizontal and vertical, quick and slow, accented and fluid--create a chiaroscuro effect perfectly suited to the dramatic music. Yet Haun also creates a mysterious sense of community among the dancers, often through subtle hand movements: the hands may be clasped, fisted and shaken, opened servilely with the palms up. Frasz's work is darker and funky, in a lower register. Whether it's something humorous like her new The Mood Swing (a trio that explores how people in different moods can irritate each other) or serious like the new Sea Songs (inspired by a folk song about three fishers), a Frasz dance looks you right in the eye. With several other older works by each choreographer planned, this program promises a little something for everyone. Friday and Saturday at 8 at the Dance Center of Columbia College, 4730 N. Sheridan; $10-$12, but tickets for the benefit Saturday are $35 and include a reception afterward. Call 271-7928 or 227-4496 for tickets.
