Windhand, Mount Salem, Marmora Agenda Recommended Soundboard

When: Wed., Sept. 11, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10
Virginia doom band Windhand cloak their songs in riffs like hulking fog banks, and on their imminent album, Soma (Relapse), that colossal, evil haze can feel eerily supernatual—an impression they encourage with song titles such as “Boleskine,” a reference to the estate of occultist Aleister Crowley. Soma isn’t just cosmically dark and heavy, though—it’s also strongly melodic, with clean, powerful vocals from front woman Dorthia Cottrell and huge, tidally propulsive passages that sound like grunge played way too slow on a turntable. But that’s not to say this is radio-friendly stuff—the songs are often vastly long, and Cottrell’s ghostly moans and blustery cries feel like incantations rising straight from the pit of her stomach. —Leor Galil Mount Salem and Marmora open.
