Late last year Texas Monthly magazine published a long, meticulously researched story about Trigger, the Martin N-20 classical acoustic guitar that Willie Nelson has played for almost every one of his live performances and recording sessions since he bought it in 1969. It’s not only a fascinatingly in-depth look into one of pop music’s long-running quirks, but it’s also an epic ode to not fixing something that isn’t broken (though Trigger needs considerable upkeep to stay playable). Though he has famously broad tastes for a country singer and a history of experimenting in, say, reggae or pop standards, Nelson centers his performance around two very simple elements: his sweet tenor voice and the inimitable, unpredictable cascades of notes that tumble out of Trigger. Both of those things have only improved with time, and though he hit what most people consider retirement age a decade and a half ago, he’s been making better music and playing more shows than artists younger than the jokes about his IRS troubles. —Miles Raymer Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real open.
