Charlton Heston turns in one of his better, least self-conscious performances as an illiterate, saddle-worn cowboy whose longing for a peaceful old age runs into conflict with his compassion for a determined widow (Joan Hackett) and her problems. One of the more memorable westerns of the late 60s, this early film by Tom Gries (1968) prefigures much of the elegiac melancholy of westerns of the early 70s. With Donald Pleasence.
