Wicker Park Fest Member Picks Recommended

When: July 26-27 2014
Price: $5 suggested donation
Wicker Park Fest presents three stages of live music this weekend at the intersection of North and Milwaukee, all booked by the folks who run the nearby Subterranean. Between them the North Stage (sponsored by Subterranean), the Center Stage (sponsored by Small Bar), and the South Stage (sponsored by Smoke Daddy) play host to a wide range of acts, including psychobilly veteran Reverend Horton Heat (headlining the North Stage on Sat 7/26) and mellow indie rockers Maritime (playing the South Stage on Sun 7/27). Late on Saturday the best place to be is definitely the Center Stage, with headliners Owls (see Soundboard for more on the recently reunited Chicago emo weirdos) and emo revivalists Pet Symmetry, who've doubtless taken a few notes from Owls. The North Stage provides some formidable competition, though, with alt-country singer-songwriter Lydia Loveless and pretty Philadelphia-based indie-pop band Hop Along. On Sunday, Sabbathy sibling punk-rock duo Jeff the Brotherhood headlines the North Stage, right after gritty too-many-guitar slingers Diarrhea Planet. On the Center Stage, indie-rock darlings Woods (see Soundboard) put the finishes touches on a day that began with Chicago art-pop group Oshwa. Down on the South Stage, the must-see act is massive Louisville posthardcore band Young Widows. Wicker Park Fest also features children's entertainment and dozens of local vendors, like most such street festivals. More distinctive are its large-scale outdoor art installations, which include John Bannon's Eye Candy, a humongous, glowing piece of hard candy whose lighted surface reacts to crowd movement. Beneficiaries of your $5 suggested donation include Jonathan Burr Elementary and the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce. —Luca Cimarusti
