Jesse Eisenberg, Melissa Leo, and Tracy Morgan make an unlikely but entertaining trio in this frantic shaggy-dog story, though the comedy is often undercut by the sense that they're working their asses off to put the story across. A self-destructive piano student (Eisenberg) faces a big-stakes audition but also needs to deliver his drug-addicted mother (Leo) to rehab. Because she has no insurance and her urine happens to be clean, the intake counselor urges her to get high so she can test positive for drugs and be admitted, and mother and son go off in search of her dealer (Morgan). The movie never recovers from this convoluted logic, but if you can forget about that, there are some funny scenes; the best moments come from pairing Eisenberg, a performer who always seems to be thinking too much, with Morgan, who's never been accused of that. Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswaner directed their own script.
