To the editor:

While I appreciated the Reader's mention of WBEZ's Stories on Stage in its recent item about the New Yorker coming to the Goodman in June (Section Two, June 15), I do want to take issue with the writer's suggestion that we now have "big-time competition." It's wonderful that the New Yorker was drawn to Chicago to present two performances. Having sold out six shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art this year, Stories on Stage can vouch for the fact that Chicago audiences love live dramatic short story readings. I attended the New Yorker program on Friday evening. It was beautifully directed by Steve Scott, not only the associate producer of the Goodman, but a founding member of the Stories on Stage artistic team, having directed more than 18 Stories on Stage shows over the years. Other than the fact that the actors sat on a stool instead of standing, the offerings were identical in style and presentation to what we have been doing for years. The New Yorker does feature wonderful writers, many of whose stories we have read over the years. Other than the fact that the stories read were originally printed in their magazine, well, there's not much else to distinguish their programming from ours. We do think it unfortunate, therefore, that your writer suggested that a local project, presenting the best talent that Chicago has to offer over the course of 90 shows since 1992, should feel threatened by a two-day visitor from New York.

Well, Chicago, don't wait around for the New Yorker. Join us at the MCA in January as Chicago's only live dramatic short story reading series kicks off its tenth season, featuring Chicago's finest actors reading contemporary and classic literature!
