Who Does Your Hair?

"I do."

Clare Frohrip has two heads of hair, both of which she takes care of herself. She started cutting her own hair--short in the back and on the sides, longer and spiky on top--when she was in high school with a pair of scissors and an electric razor. "Usually when I go in to have a professional look at it they tell me I'm doing fine," she says. But for her Polly Jean Harvey impersonation in the PJ Harvey tribute band 50 Ft. Queenie, Frohrip's 'do didn't quite cut it. She went to a shop on Milwaukee, showed a clerk a photo of Harvey circa 1995, and walked out with a shoulder-length black wig with long layers and a flip. When Frohrip got done singing she'd throw it on the floor backstage. "Then I'd just throw it in a crate or whatever I could find and bring it home," she says. It was ruined within five months. She has a new wig now, plus "one of those foam heads and a net," she says. "It travels in a bag, and I brush it and everything. It's a nicer one too, with a realistic scalp. And I think the layers are better."
