Magic Milk, Meat Wave, Polish Gifts

When: Thu., April 25, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10, $8 in advance
White Lung has canceled. Meat Wave has been added to the show. Vancouver four-piece White Lung treats the traditional fast-loud-short approach of hardcore punk like a rule of thumb, not a commandment. The ten songs on last year’s bristling Sorry (Deranged) total less than 20 minutes, but they sometimes feel like attempts at pop-friendly black metal that use hardcore’s pogoing rhythms rather than blurry blastbeats—opener “Take the Mirror,” for instance, begins with what’s basically a beefier version of the brittle, tremolo-picked guitar sound of classic misanthropic Norwegian black metal. White Lung departs from hardcore orthodoxy in other ways too: the band’s rhythm section gives songs such as “Bunny” and “Glue” an immediate accessibility with nimble hard-funk grooves. Front woman Mish Way sometimes pushes her powerful, assured howl till it breaks up around the edges, and even when her singing stays clean she sounds like a voice student gone feral—plus she’s fronting an iconoclastic band that plays with enough fury to win over its share of skeptical punk purists. —Leor Galil Magic Milk and Polish Gifts open.
