Austin documentary maker Heather Courtney traveled to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and then to Afghanistan to shoot this video about a handful of young men who join the National Guard and wind up overseas, sweeping rural roads for improvised explosive devices. The soldiers and their parents are the sort of people typically romanticized in the media as America's heartland, but the reality captured here is far from ennobling: the young men leave home soft, ignorant, and poorly prepared (one of their army instructors can't pronounce the name Hamid Karzai or remember if he's still president of Afghanistan), and they return home despondent and disillusioned.
Director: Heather Courtney
Producer: Heather Courtney, Megan Gilbride and David Hartstein
