The largest living things ever are certainly photogenic enough for the vast concave Omnimax screen, but the filmmakers' desperate attempts to create characters and drama dominate this wildlife documentary. Marine scientists following a migrating mother and her calf give the two cute names, and the whales become the default protagonists as voice-over narration delivered by Patrick Stewart hypes the suspense: will they reach their destination? The almost abstract graphic interest of some images, especially footage of a mass of humpbacks rhythmically corralling and consuming their prey, suggests how much more visually stimulating and informative the rest of this 1996 movie could have been. 44 min.
