Of all this summer’s street festivals, West Fest is most definitely the punkest. Booked by the Empty Bottle, the fest’s main stage is headlined by reunited Portland garage creeps Dead Moon on Saturday, with acid-fried Texas noise rockers Spray Paint and local postpunks Negative Scanner filling a pair of the opening slots. The Murder City Devils and their variety of dark, and boozy bar-rock command the stage on Sunday, but not before the guitar onslaught of Diarrhea Planet, the earnest throwback indie rock of the Swirlies, and a masked, half-naked Nobunny—along with plenty of bubblegum-pop antics—come on in support. Also included at the festival is a DJ stage of Chicago house music, with some familiar names from the club circuit, like Mark Farina, Derek Carter, John Simmons, and Jevon Jackson. And as is the way of most street fests, food and drink vendors will be slinging refreshments, arts and crafts vendors will be selling wares, and a kid’s stage will offer plenty to do for the tykes. —Luca Cimarusti
