Lauren Lubow's one-act about Christina Riggs, a woman executed in 2000 for murdering her two children, runs just under an hour, but it sticks with you for days. In a disturbing, raw, and surprisingly sympathetic performance from Carrie Hardin, Riggs is anything but one-dimensional. "Treading water is a tricky thing," she says, recounting her short, difficult life from death row. What she did to her two young children was undeniably horrific, but by putting it in the context of a life of poverty and abuse, this Prologue Theatre Company production asks the audience to question this ultimate punishment. And is it really a punishment? Riggs asks for the death penalty, arguably making the government part of an assisted suicide in this heartbreaking, emotionally messy piece. —Marissa Oberlander
