Wedding Dress, Dr. Manhattan, Melkbelly

When: Fri., Nov. 21, 8 p.m. 2014

Erin Elders plays guitar for techy ’n’ tappy local math-pop band Maps & Atlases, and a couple years ago he put together this side project, recruiting members of indie-rock outfits Suns, Joan of Arc, and the Love of Everything. Wedding Dress strips away the tense, proggy shredding of Maps & Atlases in favor of forlorn, mellow, folk-leaning indie pop. This April the group released its gorgeous, sophisticated first single, “Loom” b/w “Heavy Earth,” and it’s also evolved into a tight, pro-gear live act. (Elders no longer tours with Maps & Atlases so he can spend more time on Wedding Dress.) On the first Wedding Dress full-length, the new Desperate Glow (Lovitt), Elders sounds like he’s starting to get bored with delicate indie rock: he does a number on the band’s rich, yearning tunes, chopping them up and layering in fractured drum takes, glitchy electronics, and layers of strings, synths, and vocal harmonies. The resulting collision of beautiful simplicity and unexpected weirdness makes for an exciting, satisfying long player. This show is a release party. —Luca Cimarusti
