We Monsters

German Expressionism was one of the key influences on film noir, brought to Hollywood by directors who had fled the Third Reich (Fritz Lang, Robert Siodmak, Edgar G. Ulmer, Billy Wilder). Director Sebastian Ko becomes one of their standard bearers with this stylish debut feature (2015), a tightly plotted, tension-filled neo-noir about divorced parents trying to cover up their teenage daughter's confession of murder. Mehdi Nebbou gives a brooding, menacing performance as the beleaguered dad, and Janina Fautz makes a convincing femme fatale as his remorseless spoiled brat. With Ulrike C. Tscharre. In German with subtitles.
