Singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield broke out of the DIY punk scene in 2013 with Cerulean Salt, her second album as Waxahatchee. On it she shows off her ability to write penetrating songs by veering between two basic poles—muscular, lean rock aided by a full band with punk flair, and bare, trenchant solo material in which each subtle gesture reverberates. Crutchfield’s broadened her color palette on the new Ivy Tripp (Merge) by employing bits of country twang (“The Dirt”) and mathy discord (“<”) while still making music that can cut to the bone. The stylistic changeups don’t always follow through, but Crutchfield gets it right more often than not. On the lo-fi pop number “La Loose” she marries a robotic percussion loop with a sweet, wordless vocal hook to create the same somber, intimate magic that’s made her best material levitate. —Leor Galil Waxahatchee also plays a sold out show at Beat Kitchen on Fri 5/8.
