Wax Idols, TV Ghost, Radar Eyes

When: Sat., April 20, 10 p.m. 2013
Price: $10
Wax Idols’ 2011 debut, No Future, is a perfectly enjoyable collection of garage pop tinged with the influence of female-fronted punk groups such as X-Ray Spex and Romeo Void, but it didn’t do much to distinguish the group—led by former Chicagoan and part-time dominatrix Heather Fedewa, aka Hether Fortune—from the bustling Bay Area scene that birthed it. Wax Idols’ new Discipline & Desire, on the other hand, is something else entirely. The band has undergone some lineup changes in the past few years, and along the way it’s dialed up the darkness and aggression, cut down on the bubblegum, and ended up replicating the moment when the first wave of goth bands emerged from the UK punk scene. With her clipped, forceful vocal delivery, Fedewa is a dead ringer for Siouxsie Sioux in her pre-dream-pop days; the clean-toned electric guitars drenched in flanger sound like they were lifted straight off an early Cure record; and the album-opening “Stare Back” has the creepy insistence of an up-tempo Bauhaus cut. They’re old sounds, but Fedewa and crew make them feel more vital and alive than nearly any other rock band I’ve heard this year. —Miles Raymer TV Ghost and Radar Eyes headline. Wax Idols also play at 4 PM today as part of the free, all-ages Record Store Day concert that Permanent Records host from 1 PM till close. From first to last, the lineup is Sros Lords, Soup Cans, TV Ghost, Wax Idols, Gel Set, Matchess, Verma, the Hecks, and Brainbombs cover band Maybe & the Sick Fucks.
