Warnock Lecture Series: Gulru Necipoglu

When: Thu., Oct. 7, 4 p.m. 2010
Price: free
In this lecture, Prof. Necipoğlu will trace the evolution of Ottoman sultanic mosques with centralized domed plans in Istanbul and Edirne against the comparative backdrop of Rome, focusing on the patronage of the sultans and popes. By interweaving the evolution of Ottoman sultanic mosques with the protracted construction history of St. Peter’s Cathedral, the lecture will highlight some veiled dialogues that are overlooked when these monuments are treated separately. Ultimately, Prof. Necipoğlu considers the Mediterranean a fluid and unfiying body, connecting two architectural trajectories, once considered disparate.
