Waiting | Chicago Reader

A cynical Palestinian theater director plans to leave the Gaza Strip for good but reluctantly agrees to oversee the auditions for a fledgling national theater company; accompanied by a TV anchorwoman and her cameraman, he sets off for a tour of various refugee camps in search of actors. In films like Ticket to Jerusalem and the indelible Haifa, director Rashid Masharawi has proved himself a keen observer of the damage inflicted on a displaced people, and this stark 2005 feature articulates their mingled hope and despair over the prospect of a reunified Palestine.
