Wadi

In Wadi (1981), Israeli-born filmmaker Amos Gitai presents connections and conflicts among Jews and Arabs living in a valley of his native Haifa; this 1991 video begins with that documentary and adds material shot a decade later. The original film, set amid the valley's scattered and ramshackle housing, included an Arab man and his Jewish wife, who told Gitai they managed to get along because humans just aren't that different. But ten years later the Jewish woman explains with lonely dignity that her husband was given an ultimatum by his family and “persuaded” her to leave him by beating her daily. 97 min.
