The folks at LiveWire Chicago Theatre conducted an online poll to determine the theme for their annual shorts festival, and "street corner" carried the day. There's a lot of potential there, but the pieces almost all hit a dead end. The best is BE by Erin Barlow, which provides a charming snapshot of a couple on their first date. Monica Dionysiou's Sarah is an emo version of Annie Hall, and Joel Ewing's Dave is patient and bemused by her self-lacerating chatter. James Armstrong's Canceling Christmas takes on an intriguing subject--the Canterbury Christmas riots of 1647, when Oliver Cromwell really did declare war on Christmas--but fails to develop it beyond a crude, Ren Faire-esque sketch. Joshua Weinstein's droll introductions turn out to be the liveliest and most honest part of the evening. --Kerry Reid
