Worth a look, if you can stand another movie about a high school athlete and his search for fulfillment, for an engaging performance by Matthew Modine and a quirky screenplay by Darryl Ponicsan (The Last Detail). Ponicsan finds room for the eccentric portraits of Pacific seacoast lowlifes that are his peculiar specialty, and shapes the drama toward the strong implication that our hero's insane dedication to his sport (wrestling) is actually a product of a typical teenager's sexual frustration (though the film does contain an unconscionable number of fag jokes, apparently intended to ward off the homoerotic implications of the subject). Unfortunately, Harold Becker's direction seems deliberately designed to pull the material toward the bland and conventional—toward easy payoffs and Rocky-style inspirational melodrama. With Linda Fiorentino, Michael Schoeffling, Ronny Cox, and Harold Sylvester (1985).
