Playwright Philip Ridley expects us to believe that frazzled, grief-stricken Anita—whose son, Vincent, was recently murdered by gay bashers—would willingly spend an afternoon engaged in evasions, threats, monologues, and foot massages with a dodgy teenage stranger she's seen casing her flat and Vincent's grave. It's absurd. So in this second part of Theatre Y's Exiled Trilogy, director Melissa Hawkins puts her cast beyond the reach of logic, in a bright, white, empty box where they're formally attired and follow tightly choreographed steps. Freed from the burden of plausibility, Hawkins's meticulous actors turn Ridley's overwritten, implausible script into 100 minutes of probing, harrowing, hallucinogenic truth. —Justin Hayford
